What does elevation gain pace mean?

Elevation gain pace describes how much climbing is packed into a route and how quickly you climbed it. A 10 km route with 1,000 m of gain is a very different effort from a 10 km flat walk, even if the distance looks the same.

How is it calculated?

Elevation density = elevation gain ÷ distance Vertical speed = elevation gain ÷ time Average grade = gain ÷ horizontal distance × 100

The calculator shows meters per kilometer, feet per mile, grade, pace, and vertical speed because each metric answers a different question.

Why is this useful for trail planning?

Elevation density helps you compare routes before choosing one. Vertical speed helps you compare your climbing fitness after completing a route. Together they show whether a hike was slow because it was long, steep, technical, or simply tiring.

How should you interpret steep numbers?

High gain per mile or kilometer usually means the route will feel much harder than its distance suggests. Add extra time, water, and food, especially if the route is exposed or the weather is hot.
