What does this Morocco baccalaureate GPA calculator do?
This calculator helps Moroccan students translate a bac result into language that international universities understand. In Morocco, the baccalaureate result is normally shown as a moyenne out of 20. In many foreign forms, especially US-style applications, students may see GPA fields based on a 4.0 scale. The problem is that these two systems are not the same. A Moroccan 12/20 is not always understood correctly if someone simply reads it as 60%. A Moroccan 16/20 is a very strong mark, and 18 or 19 can be rare in normal marking. Because of that, a good calculator should not just multiply by 4 and stop there.
The Moroccan secondary grading description used on this page follows the 0–20 scale and mention bands summarized by Nuffic in its Morocco grades reference. Nuffic also explains the bac structure, including the 25%, 25%, and 50% weighting for school marks, regional exam, and central written exam in its Bac structure page.
Formula used
| Calculation | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Bac moyenne | (Continuous × 0.25) + (Regional × 0.25) + (National × 0.50) | Final Moroccan bac average out of 20 |
| Linear GPA | Moyenne ÷ 20 × 4 | A simple mathematical comparison |
| Context GPA | Band-based estimate | Uses Moroccan mention ranges instead of pure percentage |
| Required national | (Target − 0.25C − 0.25R) ÷ 0.50 | National exam mark needed for a target moyenne |
Formula variable explanation
| Variable | French | Arabic | Input meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| C | Contrôle continu | المراقبة المستمرة | School marks, entered out of 20 |
| R | Examen régional | الامتحان الجهوي | Regional exam mark, entered out of 20 |
| N | Examen national | الامتحان الوطني | National exam mark, entered out of 20 |
| M | Moyenne générale | المعدل العام | Final bac moyenne out of 20 |
Worked example
| Input | Value | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Contrôle continu | 13/20 | 25% |
| Examen régional | 16/20 | 25% |
| Examen national | 14/20 | 50% |
- Continuous part = 13 × 0.25 = 3.25.
- Regional part = 16 × 0.25 = 4.00.
- National part = 14 × 0.50 = 7.00.
- Final bac moyenne = 3.25 + 4.00 + 7.00 = 14.25/20.
- A 14.25/20 result falls inside the Bien range and gives a strong estimated GPA range.
Final answer: 14.25/20, mention Bien, with both Moroccan-context and linear GPA estimates.
How to use the calculator
Use the direct moyenne field when you already know your official bac average. Use the three component fields when you want to calculate the result before the final mark is printed. Enter every note out of 20. Do not enter percentages such as 70 or 85 because that would break the Moroccan scale. If you want to know how much you need in the national exam, enter continuous assessment, regional mark, and a target moyenne. The calculator then shows the national exam mark needed for that target.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is converting Moroccan marks as if they were simple percentages. A student may think 12/20 means 60% and therefore a weak GPA. That can be misleading because Moroccan marking culture is different from many US high-school percentage systems. Another mistake is ignoring the weights. The national exam has a heavier effect than the continuous and regional parts. A small change in the national mark can move the final moyenne more than the same change in the other parts.
Practical use cases and limitations
This page is useful for students preparing applications, scholarship forms, exchange programs, and personal planning. It can also help parents and counselors explain a Moroccan transcript in French, Arabic, and English. But it has limits. It cannot know the exact conversion policy of a foreign university. It cannot replace credential evaluation. It does not prove admission eligibility. For serious applications, attach your official transcript, diploma, grading scale, and translation if required. WES has also noted in its WENR Morocco overview that Moroccan universities and schools commonly use a 20-point scale, and very high averages are not common in all contexts.
Frequently asked questions
- No. Morocco uses a 0 to 20 marking scale, while US-style GPA uses a 0 to 4 scale. There is no single official universal conversion for every university, scholarship, or admissions office. This calculator gives a careful estimate using the Moroccan mention bands and a separate simple linear comparison, so students can understand the range instead of trusting one fixed number blindly.
- The common final bac moyenne formula uses 25% continuous assessment, 25% regional examination, and 50% national examination. In symbols: moyenne bac = contrôle continu × 0.25 + examen régional × 0.25 + examen national × 0.50. Always check your official report or school guidance if your stream has special rules.
- A 14/20 is normally in the Bien band in the Moroccan description scale. A cautious GPA estimate is usually around the B or B+ range, while a simple mathematical 20-to-4 conversion gives 2.80. Because Moroccan grades are not always distributed like US grades, many admissions offices look at the transcript, rank, subject difficulty, and institution context.
- A 12/20 is commonly described as Assez bien or quite satisfactory in Moroccan secondary grading references. This calculator treats it as a meaningful passing result and gives both a Moroccan-context estimate and a simple linear estimate. Do not assume that 12/20 is automatically weak just because 12 divided by 20 looks like 60%. Moroccan marking is often stricter than a pure percentage interpretation.
- It shows two numbers because GPA conversion is not exact. The Moroccan-context estimate follows grade bands and avoids treating 10/20 as exactly 50%. The linear estimate simply multiplies the Moroccan grade by 4/20. Showing both helps students avoid a misleading single answer.
- Use it only for planning, explanation, and self-checking. For admissions, submit the official Moroccan transcript, diploma, grading scale, certified translation if required, and any conversion requested by the receiving university or evaluation agency.
- In the common Moroccan 0 to 20 grading scale, 10/20 is the basic satisfactory passing point. However, some programs, competitions, scholarships, and selective schools may require much higher averages than the minimum pass mark.
