Why calculate playlist watch time?
YouTube is increasingly used for educational courses, lecture series, tutorial playlists, and documentary compilations. Before committing to a playlist, it is helpful to know the total time investment. A course labeled "50 videos" could be anywhere from 5 hours to 50+ hours depending on individual video lengths.
Knowing the total duration also helps with planning. If you have 2 hours of commuting per day and the playlist is 15 hours total, you can estimate how many weeks it will take to complete it. At 1.5x speed, 15 hours becomes 10 hours — a meaningful time saving for long educational content.
Speed multipliers work by simply dividing the total duration. If a playlist is 600 minutes (10 hours) at normal speed, at 1.5x you will finish it in 400 minutes. At 2x you can finish in 300 minutes.

It then calculates the total watch time and shows you how long it takes at different playback speeds. YouTube does not always make total playlist duration visible, especially for large playlists.

At 1.5x speed you watch each video in two-thirds of its original time. A 10-hour playlist takes about 6 hours and 40 minutes. The time saved = Total duration − (Total duration ÷ 1.5). For a 10-hour playlist you save about 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Research suggests that 1.25x to 1.5x speed is the sweet spot for most people — fast enough to save time, but slow enough to maintain good comprehension. 2x speed requires significant mental effort and works best for content you are already familiar with. For new technical or educational material, 1.25x–1.5x is generally recommended.
