What is the difference between speed, velocity, and acceleration?

Speed tells how fast something moves. Velocity includes direction. Acceleration tells how quickly velocity changes over time. For many school worksheets, the numbers are calculated with the same algebra, but the interpretation is different.

OpenStax Physics introduces acceleration as a change in velocity over time and explains how these values connect in motion problems: OpenStax Physics acceleration section.

What formulas are covered?

speed = distance ÷ time
acceleration = (final velocity − initial velocity) ÷ time
final velocity = initial velocity + acceleration × time
displacement = initial velocity × time + ½ × acceleration × time²

The calculator is designed for basic constant-acceleration worksheet problems. It does not model changing acceleration, air resistance, or curved paths.

How should students show work?

Write the known values, choose the formula, substitute numbers with units, then solve. The most important habit is unit consistency. Do not mix meters with kilometers or seconds with hours unless you convert first.

Common worksheet mistakes

Students often divide by the wrong time unit, forget the square on time in displacement problems, or treat speed and velocity as exactly the same in word answers. The numeric calculation may be simple, but the meaning matters.

Frequently asked questions

  • No. It solves common constant-acceleration and basic speed problems.
  • Acceleration can be negative when final velocity is less than initial velocity.
  • In basic scalar form, speed is usually positive. Velocity can be positive or negative depending on direction.
  • Because acceleration changes velocity over time, and displacement accumulates that changing velocity.
  • Yes. Use the worksheet button for speed practice rows.
  • Yes. Unit labels are essential for physics and science worksheets.
