Semester GPA Calculator
Use this semester GPA calculator to estimate your term GPA from course credits and grades, then optionally project how the semester changes your cumulative GPA.
How do you calculate semester GPA?
Semester GPA is a credit-weighted average. Multiply each graded course's grade points by its credits, add all grade points together, and divide by the total graded credits. If a three-credit course earns an A worth 4.0 points, that course contributes 12 grade points. A four-credit B+ on a 3.3 scale contributes 13.2 grade points. The calculator does that automatically and excludes rows marked pass/fail or dropped.
What makes this semester GPA calculator more useful?
Most students need more than a simple average. This tool supports letter grades, percentage grades, and direct grade points. It also handles course credits, excluded rows, pass/fail courses, optional extra credit grade points, and a cumulative GPA projection when you enter your current GPA and completed credits.
What is the semester GPA formula?
Semester GPA = total semester grade points ÷ total graded semester credits. Grade points are calculated as course credits multiplied by grade value. A course that does not count toward GPA should not be included in the denominator, even if it awards academic credit.
Which mistakes should you avoid?
Do not include pass/fail credits unless your school gives them grade points. Do not use unweighted course counts when your transcript uses credits. Do not assume every school uses the same plus/minus scale. Also, be careful with retaken courses because some schools replace the old grade while others keep both attempts in the GPA.
For official reporting, always check your school handbook or registrar because grading scales and repeated-course rules vary. For a general explanation of GPA conversion, see College Board BigFuture's guide to converting GPA to a 4.0 scale. For college transcript policy context, many registrars publish their own rules; the University of Washington provides a clear example of how grade points and credits are used in GPA calculation.
Example semester GPA calculation
Suppose you take 3 credits of A, 4 credits of B, and 3 credits of A-. On a plus/minus 4.0 scale, the grade points are 12, 12, and 11.1. The total is 35.1 grade points across 10 graded credits, so the semester GPA is 3.51.
Frequently asked questions
-
That depends on your school, major, scholarship, and goals. A 3.0 is often considered solid, while 3.5 and above is commonly competitive for honors, scholarships, and selective programs, but official standards vary.
-
Usually no. A pass/fail course may count toward graduation credits, but it often does not contribute grade points. Check your school policy before including it.
-
Yes. Choose percentage mode and the calculator will convert percentages to letter grades using a standard threshold table. Your school may use different cutoffs.
-
A four-credit course affects your GPA more than a one-credit course because GPA is based on grade points per credit, not just the number of classes.
-
Yes. Add current cumulative GPA and completed credits to estimate the new cumulative GPA after this semester.
