What does a final grade calculator answer?

It answers the common question: “What do I need on the final?” The calculator uses your current course grade, the final exam weight, and your target grade to solve for the final exam score needed. It also includes a what-if field so you can test possible final exam scores.

Formula

Needed final = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

The final weight must be entered as the percentage of the total course grade. If your final is worth 25%, then the rest of the course is worth 75%.

What can go wrong?

The biggest mistake is using the wrong current grade. Some gradebooks show an unweighted category average, a weighted current grade, or a grade that excludes missing assignments. Use the grade that your syllabus says counts before the final.

Frequently asked questions

  • No. This is an independent final-grade calculator page using the standard final-grade formula.
  • It means the target is not reachable without extra credit, a grading change, or a different current grade.
  • Only if you adjust the current grade and final weight to match the syllabus rule.
  • A heavier final can change the course grade more dramatically, while a small final cannot move the grade much.
  • It can model extra credit if you allow scores above 100, but the official result depends on your instructor’s policy.
