The 2021 UNIMA delinking — why there are now three universities where there was one

Until 4 May 2021, the University of Malawi (UNIMA) was a single federal institution made up of four constituent colleges. Under Acts of Parliament passed in 2019, UNIMA split into three independent, standalone universities: UNIMA itself (retaining the Chancellor College campus in Zomba), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) (merging the former College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing), and Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) (formerly known simply as The Polytechnic, in Blantyre). An earlier, separate delinking in 2011 had already split off Bunda College of Agriculture to form Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

If you graduated from any of these institutions, your transcript and degree may show either the old or new name depending on your graduation year — both refer to the same lineage of programmes and academic standards.

Degree classification thresholds

Class Weighted average
First Class Honours (UNIMA) 70% and above
Distinction (MUBAS / MZUNI variant) 75% and above
Second Class Upper Division 60 – 69%
Second Class Lower Division 50 – 59%
Pass 40 – 49%

MSCE: a 9-point scale where lower is better

The Malawi School Certificate of Education uses a 9-point numeric scale per subject — but unlike most grading conventions, 1 is the best grade and 9 is the worst, with grades 7-9 marking a fail. This mirrors the older British O-Level aggregate tradition. A candidate's overall "aggregate" is the sum of their best six subject grades, so the lowest possible (and best) aggregate is 6 — six subjects all graded 1.

To be awarded an MSCE certificate at all, a candidate must pass English plus five other subjects, with at least one of those at credit level.

How weighted average is calculated, worked through

Weighted Average = Sum of (Mark % × Credits) ÷ Sum of Credits Example: Module A (12 credits, 72%) = 864 Module B (12 credits, 65%) = 780 Module C (12 credits, 58%) = 696 Module D (12 credits, 78%) = 936 Total weighted points = 3276 Total credits = 48 Average = 3276 ÷ 48 = 68.25% → Second Class Upper Division

Bilingual note — English ndi Chichewa

English is the medium of instruction at Malawian universities, while Chichewa is the country's most widely spoken language and the primary language of early primary education. Core terms used on this calculator: maphunziro (education/studies), kuwerengera (to calculate/count), koleji (college), satifiketi (certificate).

Common questions

  • Malawian universities, led by the University of Malawi (UNIMA), record performance primarily as a weighted percentage average rather than a US-style points GPA. Degree classification follows these bands: First Class Honours requires 70% or above, Second Class Upper Division requires 60-69%, Second Class Lower Division requires 50-59%, and Pass requires 40-49%. Some institutions, particularly MUBAS and MZUNI, may use a higher 75% threshold for Distinction rather than UNIMA's 70% First Class boundary — always confirm with your specific institution's regulations.
  • Weighted Average = Sum of (Percentage Mark × Credits) ÷ Sum of Credits. Each module's mark is multiplied by its credit value, these are summed across all modules, then divided by the total credits. Some universities apply different weightings to different years of study (for example, weighting Year 3 and Year 4 more heavily than Year 1), so check your specific programme handbook for how your final classification is calculated.
  • Malawi has six public universities, most of which emerged from a major 2021 restructuring. The University of Malawi (UNIMA) split on 4 May 2021 under Acts of Parliament into three separate institutions: UNIMA itself (now just Chancellor College in Zomba), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS, merging the former College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing), and Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS, formerly The Polytechnic). The other three public universities — Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR, delinked earlier in 2011) — were not part of that particular restructuring.
  • The Malawian government pursued the "delinking" of UNIMA's constituent colleges as part of a wider Public Sector Reforms Programme, aiming to give each institution full autonomy, financial independence, and stronger governance rather than operating as colleges under one umbrella university. Parliament passed the enabling Acts (Nos. 18, 19, and 20 of 2019) in 2019, and the three new universities — UNIMA, KUHeS, and MUBAS — formally began operating as independent institutions on 4 May 2021.
  • The Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) is Malawi's national secondary school leaving exam, administered by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), broadly equivalent to O-Levels or a US high school diploma. Each subject is graded on a 9-point numeric scale where 1 is the highest grade and 9 is the lowest — unlike most systems, a LOWER number means better performance. Grades 7-9 are fail grades. To be awarded an MSCE certificate, a candidate must pass English plus five other subjects, with at least one of those at credit level.
  • A candidate's MSCE aggregate is the sum of their grades in their best six subjects. Because grade 1 is the best possible result, a LOWER aggregate is better — the strongest possible MSCE result is an aggregate of 6, meaning a candidate scored a perfect grade 1 in all six counted subjects. This mirrors the older British O-Level aggregate convention, which is the historical basis for MSCE's grading structure.
  • Not from official public sources currently available — MANEB has not published a single fixed nationwide percentage-to-grade conversion table that this calculator can independently verify. What is consistently documented is the ordinal structure: 9 grades per subject, 1 best to 9 worst, with 7-9 as fail. For that reason, this calculator asks for the numeric grade you actually received (exactly as shown on your MSCE result slip) rather than asking you to re-derive it from a percentage, which avoids presenting unverified boundaries as fact.
  • It gives an approximate, commonly used estimate for international comparison purposes — not an official Malawian calculation, since MSCE itself doesn't produce a GPA. Each numeric MSCE grade is mapped to an approximate US-style 4.0 GPA point value. Treat this as a starting reference only. If you are applying to an institution abroad that requires a formal GPA-equivalent figure, request an official credential evaluation rather than relying on an approximate conversion.
  • As of recent National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) records, Malawi has 6 public universities and over 20 NCHE-accredited private universities. The NCHE is the statutory regulator responsible for registering and accrediting all higher education institutions in the country — always verify a private institution's current accreditation status directly with the NCHE before enrolling, since a small number of previously accredited institutions have had their accreditation withdrawn.
  • English is the medium of instruction at virtually all Malawian universities, including UNIMA, MUBAS, and the other public institutions. Chichewa is Malawi's most widely spoken national language and the primary medium of instruction in early primary school, but university coursework, examinations, and official transcripts are conducted in English throughout higher education.
  • A weighted average of 40% generally marks the Pass classification — the minimum standard required to graduate with an honours degree at most Malawian universities. Falling below this in your overall weighted average, or failing specific compulsory modules, may require resitting examinations, repeating modules, or in serious cases repeating a year. Specific progression and resit policies vary by institution and faculty — confirm with your academic office.
  • Since Malawi uses percentage-based classification bands rather than a points GPA, comparison requires an approximate conversion. A commonly used mapping treats Malawian First Class (70%+) as roughly equivalent to a US GPA in the 3.7-4.0 range, Second Class Upper (60-69%) as roughly 3.0-3.6, and Second Class Lower (50-59%) as roughly 2.0-2.9. These are general estimates only — if you need an official conversion for graduate school or employment abroad, request a formal credential evaluation rather than relying on an approximate scale.
  • Multiple sources documenting Malawian university grading note that while UNIMA uses 70% as its First Class Honours threshold, MUBAS and MZUNI may apply a higher 75% threshold for their top classification. This calculator flags this distinction where your selected institution is known to differ, but always confirm the exact current threshold directly with your specific faculty's academic regulations, since these policies can be revised.
